Boylan meets Miss Teen Philippines! - by Daryl Clark

Mayor Florencio Padua of Goa, Camarines Sur invited us to be his personal guests at their town fiesta in June of 1984. As mentioned previously, we met the amazing Mr. Padua during our "Fear and Loathing" trip a few months earlier (see previous story). Boylan and I arrived early the first day of the fiesta. The Mayor gave us a hearty welcome and as usual offered us some Johnny Walker Black and beer. Although it was still early in the morning, we continued to practice (to refuse an offer is an insult) and proceeded to drink with his entourage. It was a very hot and humid day in late June and by 1:00 p.m. the alcohol was causing us to get a little drowsy. We were hesitant to take a siesta because one of the local girls had become best friends with Miss Bining-Bining Philipinas (Miss Teen Philippines) while away at college. Of course it was customary for special luminaries to pay a courtesy call to the Mayor during fiesta!

Another hour passed and there was no sign of our beautiful young visitor, so Boylan headed upstairs for a nap. In the meantime, Ms. Teenage Philippines finally arrived. All of the Filipino men are to "Masupog" (ashamed) to talk with her, so they sat her down next to me. I spent about 20 minutes talking with her and found out she was a student in Manila and she worked at a travel agency on Mabini St. in Ermita. The courtesy time was over and Miss Teenage Philippines was bidding us adieu, when suddenly Boylan appeared at the top of the stairs.

Boylan gave her his classic grin and a slow wave. The Mayor pointed up to the top of the stairs and said, "that's Boylan". Miss Teen Age Philippines then left the house never to return. Boylan came down the stairs and marveled at this diabolical girl. He also grabbed her business card from another woman, and he proudly proclaimed , "I'm going to take Ms. Teen Age Philippines out on a date, she likes me"!

We enjoyed the remainder of the fiesta and on our way home we headed our own separate ways. A few months later, I ran into Scott and the Sorsogon group and they loudly proclaimed to me. "Did you hear Boylan got a date with Miss Teenage Philippines and she liked him?" I looked at them and recounted my version of the story. It really didn't matter though, because

one of the greatest things about Boylan was his ability to describe a totally different experience than you when you were with him at the exact same event!

I do know he met her! She could have liked him! If he had ever called her, she might have gone out on a date too! So I guess he was right after all!
